Save the Ichetucknee! Protect our air and water!
We still have a chance to stop Suwannee American, a company with
a
horrible environmental record, from building a heavy-industry cement
kiln next to the pristine Ichetucknee River. The plant would
be 3.5
miles from the river, 40 miles northwest of Gainesville.
Lisa Edgar from the DEP is in charge of issuing this company
an
air permit: 850-488-2960 or lisa.edgar@dep.state.fl.us
Come join the demonstration at the commissioners' meeting on 6/19!

The Labor Party's "Just Health Care" referendum campaign.
The Alachua County Labor Party will pursue a non-binding referendum
calling for universal health care in Florida, whereby everyone is
covered for all of our health care needs by a single, simple plan.
Everybody in, nobody out. This can send a message to Tallahassee
&
Washington that we no are no longer willing to be at the mercy of
health insurance companies with their astronomical prices, impossible
paperwork, exclusions, co-pays, deductibles and denials of care.
We are planning a formal presentation to the County Commission
on Tuesday, June 27, and we need your help contacting commissioners
and asking them to place this initiative on the ballot.
For info, phone Mark at 377-9935. Childcare available, call ahead.

Wilderness preservation & the US Forest Service: public planning
National Forests aren't protected in the way National Parks are.
Over
half the lands managed by the Service have already fallen prey to decades
of clearcutting & tree 'farming', oil and gas development, mining,
& other
industrial uses. Under public pressure, Clinton last Fall directed
the
Service to develop a policy for saving remaining roadless wilderness.
A public meeting will be held June 29th at the Sheraton (2900 SW 13th
St),
for review of the plan--which has many holes--and for public response.
Out of 300 hearings nationwide, this is the only one this side of Atlanta.
The public may comment by mail (or to roadlessdeis@fs.fed.us) until
7/17.
The Sierra Club urges you to insist that the plan should include:
1. Protection for every roadless Forest of at least 1000 acres.
2. Protection of Alaska's Tongass Forest, the largest temperate rainforest
left in the world, & currently specifically excluded
(for harvesting).
3. No logging, mining, or off-road vehicles - not just no roadbuilding.
And hey, you're welcome to demand better protections than these!

Michael Moore's "THE AWFUL TRUTH" - at the CMC
+ 9:15 - the previous episode
+ 10:00 - this week's Brand New episode!
"The smartest, funniest, most subversive satire on TV." (The LA Times)
The only station in America with the guts to run Moore's show
is Bravo,
which you can't get in Gainesville without a satellite dish.
But wait! The CMC can show you The Awful Truth... What
place could be
more fitting? That's what Mike thought, so we were one of ten
community centers in the nation that won a contest to show the program.
Check out the flyer: http://www.gator.net/~cmc/pages/miketry.htm
Moore is creator of "Roger & Me," about General Motors abandoning
his home-
town, & "TV Nation," an Emmy-winning investigative-reporting comedy
series.
Note: some of our local activists were 'guest stars' in a recent
segment
about the rampant use of the death penalty
in Florida and Texas.

National Organization for Women - Consciousness Raising (CR)
Campus NOW and Gainesville Area NOW are conducting a CR series.
CR is a radical weapon of the feminist movement, used to:
- Get to the root of sexism. Who benefits? Who pays?
- Understand that the pain and struggles in our lives are not our
individual problems, and we cannot solve them on our own.
- For women to get what we want, we need to get together.
Where: The Institute for Hispanic and Latino Cultures (1504 W Univ.)
When: final CR 6/21 Cost: $5 per session.
Childcare provided.

UF Physical Plant plans to move 80% of Building Services custodial
staff to the night shift (11pm-7am) & increase their coverage
area.
Employees have told the administration that night shift will:
- Disrupt child care, transportation, second jobs
- Strain marriages and families
- Jeopardize health, acc. to the Centers for Disease Control
- Place women in empty buildings in the middle of the night
- Decrease, not increase, the amount and quality of work,
due to chronic lack of satisfying sleep
- Cost $100,000's more per year in electricity, etc.
UF custodians start at less than $12,800 annually.
Administrators claim this is what their 'customers' want: for service
to be provided "transparently" (when no one has to look at them...)
Please let the administration know that custodians are not
a "disruption" and deserve to be treated with dignity:

I mis-typed the phone number for Kathy, the contact for the Sierra Club's
preparation meeting at 7:30, Monday the 26th, where folks will be getting
warmed up for the wilderness protection public hearing that Thursday.
It should be 332-8831 (not 331). Very sorry.
